CLAYTON, Mo. -- A grand jury has decided not to indict Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson for killing 18-year-old Michael Brown, St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch announced Monday. McCulloch said members of the jury met for 25 days and heard over 70 hours of testimony from over 60 witnesses before reaching their decision. He confirmed Wilson had fired 12 shots at Brown, who was unarmed. Brown's Aug. 9 death sparked massive demonstrations in the St. Louis suburb of ...

LONDON — A struggle over who will succeed the late President Michael Sata of Zambia intensified on Friday when members of the governing Patriotic Front said Guy Scott, the acting president, had been suspended from the party but would remain the country’s interim leader, according to news reports. Malozo Sichone, a member of the Patriotic Front central committee, said the panel had decided to suspend Mr. Scott for “unconstitutional conduct and for abrogating the party constitution,” reports ...
Barotseland Administrator General, Rt. Honorable Afumba Mombotwa, has continued to caution Barotse nationals against those who deliberately seek to distort information and mislead the world by asserting that there is a dispute between Barotseland and Zambia. The actual position rather is that Barotseland is now a separate state from Zambia in accordance with the declaration of the last Barotse National Council (BNC) of 27th March 2012, that Barotzis citizens have nothing to do with Zambia any ...
A Zambian presidential aspirant who is also Commerce and trade minister Bob Sichinga has said he will resolve the Barotseland Agreement 'impasse' if elected Zambian president. Speaking at a press briefing Wednesday morning when he announced his intention to vie for the Patriotic Front presidency following the death of President Michael Sata, Sichinga said there was need to resolve Barotseland Agreement issue and other developmental projects that were initiated by the late president Sata. ...
The UN general assembly recognized Palestine in 2012 as a non-member observer state, paving the way to a wider official recognition from European states. British MPs have started debating a symbolic motion on whether to recognize the Palestinian state.  Britain’s current policy towards the issue is that it "reserves the right to recognize a Palestinian state bilaterally at the moment of their choosing, and when it can best help bring about peace." In his opening remarks, Labour MP Grahame ...
OUAGADOUGOU - Authorities in Burkina Faso named former foreign minister Michel Kafando as transitional president on Monday in a key step towards returning the West African country to democracy in the wake of a brief military takeover. Kafando was chosen as part of a charter hammered out after long time President Blaise Compaore was toppled on October 31 following mass protests, only to be replaced a day later by Lieutenant Colonel Isaac Zida. Kafando will name a prime minister to appoint a ...

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO)  has now admitted the nation state of Barotseland as a member.

For any entity to be a member of UNPO, they have to be a Nation or People, possessing the will to be identified as a Nation or People and are bound to a common heritage which can be historical, racial, ethnic, religious or territorial. The prospective participant can also be a section of a People, constituting a minority, living on a portion of its ancestral territory, incorporated into a State other than a State represented by that People.

Last year two other International bodies recognized Barotseland as a sovereign member state. The Federation of Free States of Africa (www.africafederation.net) and the Union of Free States (www.unfs.org)

The Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO) is an international, nonviolent, and democratic membership organisation. Its members are indigenous peoples, minorities, and unrecognised or occupied territories who have joined together to protect and promote their human and cultural rights, to preserve their environments, and to find nonviolent solutions to conflicts which affect them.

Although the aspirations of UNPO Members differ greatly, they are all united by one shared condition – they are not adequately represented at major international fora, such as the United Nations. As a consequence, their opportunity to participate on the international stage is significantly limited, as is their ability to access and draw upon the support of the global bodies mandated to defend their rights, protect their environments, and mitigate the effects of conflict.

In today’s world where over 90 percent of conflicts are intra-state, UNPO has been established to fill this gap, providing an international forum through which its Members can become effective participants and contributors to the international community. In an increasingly interdependent world it is ever more important that those who continue to be denied their rights or remain excluded be given an opportunity to present their case. UNPO works therefore to address the consequences of marginalisation, working with its Members to promote their democratic causes, to provide information, and to articulate creative and nonviolent strategies for progress, above all however, UNPO works to ensure their voices are heard.

Founded in 1991 at the Peace Palace in The Hague, UNPO is unique as an international organisation in that it is built entirely by its Members. Through this strong connection to those suffering the consequences of the exclusion the organisation seeks to address, UNPO has since grown into a prominent and respected international forum.

UNPO’s membership has also grown steadily from its original fifteen founders, representing now almost 70 Members worldwide. Although the work of UNPO adapts continually to meet the challenges of its Members and the nature of the international political climate, each Member remains committed to respecting the five principles enshrined in the UNPO Covenant: nonviolence, human rights, democracy and self-determination, environmental protection, and tolerance.

UNPO remains committed to offering an increasing number of nations and peoples an entry point into the international community, enabling its Members also to learn from one another; lending their support where there are setbacks and sharing their experiences in success.
